Carsten Koerl, Founder and Chief Executive Officer
Carsten has led all aspects of Sportradar’s business since founding the company in 2001, driving the growth of the company from a tech-focused start-up to a global leader in delivering sports data and content across a range of media and platforms. Prior to founding Sportradar, Carsten held a number of management positions within the software development and gaming industry. He was the founder of bwin and led the company through one of the most successful public listings ever undertaken on the Vienna stock market. Carsten holds a Master’s Degree in Electronic and Microprocessor Engineering from the University for Applied Sciences in Konstanz (Germany).
Next Gen Stats, the initiative first introduced in the 2014 NFL season, consists of real-time, location-based data such as speed, acceleration and distance traveled, for all players, in all games. This unique information, alongside GSIS, is distributed by Sportradar to give fans a closer look into the game, and allow them to experience it in ways never seen before. Insights from Next Gen Stats also are available for fans in-stadium, at home, and everywhere else that NFL content is consumed.
Prof. Dr. Laila Mintas, Ph.D., Deputy President Sportradar US
Laila joined Sportradar in 2016 and manages operations for all of the company’s US offices in New York, San Francisco, Menlo Park and Minneapolis. One of her main roles is as the senior liaison with key, high-profile partnerships in the US, including the NBA, NFL, NHL, MLS and NASCAR and enterprise customers such as Google, Twitter and Facebook. Laila oversees collaboration in exploring, creating and exploiting opportunities to realize the full power of sports data and ensuring that the respective sets of fans worldwide get the best level of insight and engagement possible, whichever platform or channel they choose to use.
Being a lawyer by trade, Laila previously worked several years the international law firm White & Case LLP in Berlin, Germany and specialized i.a. in Sports Law, Compliance and Litigation. In her Ph.D., she examined online betting in Europe and received a lot of praise from within the research field and from the industry. Previously, she served in Executive positions within the Sports Industry, including the Head of Legal and International Development for FIFA’s Early Warning System (FIFA EWS) in Zurich and Switzerland. She was also the Director of Sports Integrity at CONCACAF, the governing body for Soccer in North America, Central America and Caribbean — responsible for all 41 member countries where she used data to prevent, detect and investigate match manipulations in sports that are related to the betting market.
Since 2009, Laila has published a significant number of law articles and has lectured at the Humboldt University of Berlin, St John`s University and at Columbia University in New York where she is currently Professor for Global Sports Law in the ISDE Program. Laila is a board member of the well-known law journal ‘World Sports Advocate’ and has her own Sports Law Column at InsideWorldFootball.com.
Dave Abbott, Head of Technology and Operations
Dave is an entrepreneurial executive with more than 20 years of global technology experience building and scaling high volume/high availability SaaS applications. Most recently, he was the Vice President of Technology for Irdeto, Inc., a $250 million global leader in digital asset security and monetization solutions where he was responsible for Product Development and Network Operations. Dave’s responsibilities included the monetization and online security of high profile sporting events on broadcast, broadband and mobile platforms for leading broadcasters world wide. Prior to Irdeto, Dave spent 11 years with Internet Broadcasting (IB) as its founding CTO overseeing all technical operations including Product Development, Professional Services, IT and Network Operations. IB hosted and operated more than 80 award-winning local broadcast news properties, making it the largest local news provider in the world serving more than 50 million visitors and 750 million page views per month. A notable accomplishment while with IB, was Dave’s leadership in the delivery of a complete turnkey Web hosting, content creation and on-venue staffing solution for www.NBCOlympics.com for the 2004 Athens and 2006 Torino Olympic Games. Both games were punctuated by 100 percent availability and impressive profitability.
Ashok Balakrishnan, SVP of Technology and Product Management
As SVP of Technology and Product Management, Ashok leads teams in New York and San Francisco in the development of innovative technologies around advanced analytics and data science. Ashok has expertise in consumer digital products in the wearables, mobile, gaming and real-time analytics areas as well as 3D, AR and VR technologies.
Mr. Balakrishnan spent the previous 10 years at Nike, Inc., where he led agile product development teams and helped create compelling and innovative consumer digital products as well as transformative technologies for the enterprise.
Steve Byrd, Head of Global Partnerships
Steve Byrd serves as the Senior Vice President of Sales for SportRadar US. This follows a stint during which Byrd served as a consultant and advisory board member for a number of global digital sports firms. Byrd was previously Co-Chief Operating Officer at STATS, Inc. leading their growth and relationships with leagues, federations, broadcasters, brands, and technology firms for nearly two decades. Byrd is a Founding Board Member of the Fantasy Sports Trade Association and serves as an Executive-in-Residence for his alma mater, The University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
Jason Sukhraj, SVP of Business Development
Jason leads all sales-related functions and plays a key role in driving strategies for generating demand and achieving revenue objectives across Sportradar’s evolving product lines. Before Sportradar, Jason spent 7 years at Perform Media where he served as VP of Business Development. In that role, he was responsible for revenue across Perform’s portals and syndication business as well as managing their official league and distribution partnerships. Prior to Perform, he worked at Major League Soccer, New Jersey Nets, Staten Island Yankees and in various leadership roles in Toronto, Boston, Los Angeles & New York. He attended New York University, where he earned a Master’s degree in Sports Business.
Kathy Walen, Head of Human Resources
With nearly 15 years of Human Resources experience, Kathy places a high value in leading with compassion and empathy. Kathy specializes in working with small to mid-size organizations, and has worked in technology, banking and non-profit industries. She has held human resources leadership positions for MACC Commonwealth and BankFirst Corp. Kathy has extensive hands-on experience leading HR initiatives including policy design, compensation, performance management, recruiting and payroll/benefits administration. Joining Sportradar in March 2014, Kathy is responsible for growing the organization, as well as implementing HR initiatives for the US. She attended the University of Minnesota Duluth, with a focus in Communications and Music, and is a Certified Professional in Human Resources (PHR). She is an active member of Twin Cities Human Resources Association (TCHRA) and the Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM).
