Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a knee injury Wednesday.
An MRI on Tuesday showed that Machado has a knee ligament sprain. Machado has not been ruled out for the season, but will almost certainly be out into September. This is his second stint on the disabled list this year, as another knee injury kept Machado out for the first month of the season.
Perhaps as a result of his injury issues, the former No. 3 overall pick’s hitting has not made progress with the bat — his .278/.324/.341 line is a near twin to the .283/.314/.432 he put up last season.
Ryan Flaherty is the leading candidate to take over Machado’s third base spot while he’s out, but it’s been speculated that first baseman Chris Davis could slide across to the hot corner when the Orioles want to go with a more offensively oriented lineup.
