Dale Earnhardt Jr. won the Pocono 400 on Sunday despite leading only 11 laps for his second victory of the season and first career trip to victory lane at Pocono Raceway.
Earnhardt edged Brad Keselowski in a wild finish to move up two spots to third place in the Sprint Cup Series championship standings. He gave himself an opportunity to win with good pit strategy and track position. The Hendrick Motorsports star overpowered race leader Keselowski in the closing laps thanks to a piece of debris on the No. 2 Ford’s grill.
Keselowski finished second for the second straight race. Earnhardt, who won the Daytona 500, now has multiple wins in a season for the first time since 2004.
“He had me beat. I couldn’t get to him,” Earnhardt said. “I’ve lost in some strange ways, so it feels good to win one like that.”
