Rondo has torn ACL

Rondo was elected to his fourth straight All-Star game this season.

(SportsData) — Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL in his right knee suffered Friday against the Atlanta Hawks, the team announced Sunday. Rondo was originally thought to have a hyperextended knee before an MRI on Sunday revealed the full extent of the damage.

Rondo came out for warmups prior to Sunday’s game against the Miami Heat, but he could not finish the shoot-around and was taken to New England Baptist Hospital for examination. The Celtics announced the diagnosis via Twitter. He will require surgery, through a date for the procedure has not yet been determined.

“Obviously the Rondo news is tough,” Celtics head coach Doc Rivers told reporters Sunday. “I knew before the game, but I didn’t tell anyone. Obviously it was pretty emotional.”

The sixth-year pro was averaging 13.7 points, 5.6 rebounds and an NBA-best 11.1 assists per game through his 38 contests this season. He was also leading the league with 37.4 minutes per game played.
