Obama suggests better safety for football players

(SportsData) – In an interview published in New Republic, President Obama said if he had a son, he’d “think long and hard” before letting him play football.

Obama is quoted saying football fans have to realize players need to be better protected from hard hits that could cause crippling injuries.

“Those of us who love the sport are going to have to wrestle with the fact that it will probably change gradually to try to reduce some of the violence,” said Obama in the article. “In some cases, that may make it a little bit less exciting, but it will be a whole lot better for the players, and those of us who are fans maybe won’t have to examine our consciences quite as much.”

Obama said he’s more concerned about college players, who suffer injury problems but don’t have a union to fall back on like NFL players do.

“That’s something that I’d like to see the NCAA think about,” he said.
