The NFL suspended Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe one game Friday for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy. Bowe will miss the Chiefs’ season opener against the Tennessee Titans but is eligible to practice and play throughout the preseason.

Bowe was arrested last November for possession of marijuana after a traffic stop for speeding. He pleaded guilty to littering and defective equipment, and the marijuana charge was dismissed.

“I am extremely sorry that I can’t be on the field for the first game of the 2014 season because I made an error in judgment,” Bowe said in a statement. “I take responsibility for my mistake, and it will not happen again. I hope that my teammates, coaches, and Chiefs fans accept my sincere apology.”

Bowe has been hampered by a finger injury during training camp, and the team is already thin at wide receiver. Candidates to replace Bowe for Week 1 include Junior Hemingway, Kyle Williams and A.J. Jenkins.
