The Pittsburgh Pirates placed outfielder Andrew McCutchen on the 15-day disabled list Monday with a broken rib.
The Pirates were doing everything they could to ensure that McCutchen would avoid a trip to the disabled list after breaking his rib after getting hit by a pitch Aug. 3 against the Arizona Diamondbacks, but treatment and rest have not done enough for the reigning National League MVP.
McCutchen seemed to be making strides, as general manager Neil Huntington said Sunday that his progress had been “remarkable,” but the organization apparently cannot wait any longer to assess his status. McCutchen has been out of the lineup for six days while attempting to recover, which means that he could be activated from the DL on Aug. 19.
There is a chance McCutchen could rejoin the team when he is first eligible to come off the DL. McCutchen has a .947 OPS with 17 home runs this season.
