New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan announced Friday that quarterback Geno Smith — not Michael Vick — will start the season opener against the Oakland Raiders, according to the NFL Network.

Ryan named the starter after Friday’s 35-24 preseason loss to the New York Giants in which Smith went 9-of-14 passing for 137 yards and a touchdown.”He’s done everything that we’ve asked,” Ryan said.

Smith was expected to win the battle after finishing last season with three wins in the last four games.

“It’s a big deal,” Smith said. “But nothing’s going to change for me. … I think I did some good things, but I’ve got work to do.”

Vick started the second half Friday and finished 4-of-5 for 35 yards and a touchdown in two drives. “I think it’s great for Geno,” Vick said. “I knew the entire time that Geno was going to be the starter, but Geno went out and proved that he’s capable of running this team and putting this team in a position to win.”
