The New York Yankees placed All-Star pitcher Masahiro Tanaka on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday due to elbow inflammation.
Tanaka was set to undergo an MRI on his right arm Wednesday, and while team doctor Christopher Ahmad has yet to examine him, the Yankees decided to place him on the DL immediately.
His last two starts have been his worst of the season, and he admitted that his arm had been bothering him during both outings. While he was able to make it through 6.2 innings Tuesday against the Cleveland Indians, Tanaka allowed five runs on 10 hits and one walk in a 5-3 loss.
A long-term absence would obviously be a major blow to the Yankees, who have heavily relied on their rookie ace this season due to injuries to other starting pitchers. Michael Pineda still recovering from a back injury and CC Sabathia likely out for the season due to a knee injury.
