The Cleveland Indians traded starting pitcher Justin Masterson to the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday in exchange for outfielder James Ramsey.

Masterson was placed on the disabled list at the beginning of July with inflammation in his knee, but he was scheduled to return Friday to face the Texas Rangers after reporting no pain while throwing a bullpen session last week.

He has struggled following a breakout season in 2013, compiling a 4-6 record with a 5.51 ERA and 93 strikeouts in 98 innings (18 starts). Masterson will look to turn his season around as a member of the Cardinals after rehabbing the injury, which the 29-year-old said has been nagging him since the second start of the season, making it difficult for him to repeat his delivery.

The Cardinals are expected to move Carlos Martinez into the bullpen for the foreseeable future.
